Ross played basketball in Auckland from 1957 to 1968. During this time he took up the role of coach for the Auckland Women’s team, which he did for many years. He was also the Secretary and Treasurer to the Western Suburbs Basketball League for 21 years. Zena B. Gay Award award recognises a notable contribution to women’s basketball in New Zealand. Ann Robertson played for West Coast, Auckland A and B teams, and then the Tall Ferns. As a coach she won eight National Championships. She was Tall Ferns coach in 1988 and 1989 touring the team to Malaysia, the USA and Australia. Robertson has also been an Auckland Women Basketball Executive Committee member for more than 20 years, and she is an elected board member of the New Zealand Basketball Federation (now Basketball New Zealand).
