Referees and officials are a crucial part of our sport. We welcome new referees and officials, and work to develop their skills at all levels of the game. One way of doing this is through appointments at the Age-Group National Championships.

Basketball New Zealand offers a range of officiating resources available and also provides educational opportunities from time to time. If you cannot find what you are looking for in this section of the website, please email or call Referee Development Manager Melony Wealleans on 04 498 5962.

Become a referee

We have developed the BBNZ Referee Development Programme which details the development pathway and information from Kiwi Hoops to National level refereeing.

Here's our introductory referee course, Kiwi Hoops Referees Guide. It provides a basic overview of the rules of the game for people involved with junior basketball, under 13 years of age.

If you are interested in becoming a referee, contact your local Association or Basketball New Zealand for more information.

Basketball New Zealand will select and invite officials to attend Age-National Championships. For more information regarding officiating at Basketball New Zealand events please contact our Referee Development Manager -
