The New Zealand 3x3 Youth Olympic Team has missed out on the playoffs after losses to Ukraine and Brazil in Pool B.
The New Zealand team of Joe Ahie, Max de Geest, James Moors and Thomas Whyte went down 21-13, with Ukraine making the most of their opportunities.
“They came out pretty hard, hitting all their shots and we only shot 20-percent from the field, it’s just one of those days, pretty disappointing,” said Joe Ahie after the game.
“We went into that game knowing it was win or go home, we played our hearts out, we played our best but they were a better team.”
The New Zealanders had earlier lost to Brazil and finish their pool matches with two wins and two losses, which isn’t enough to send them to the quarter-finals.
Ahie says despite the disappointment the team has enjoyed the experience.
“The basketball is very high level here so it’s great to kick it against those guys because we’re just getting better every game.”
