Aon Junior Tall Ferns fall to Japan in Asian Championship opener

The Aon Junior Tall Ferns fought hard but ultimately fell to Japan 77-62 at the FIBA Under 18 Asian Championship in India.

Charlotte Whittaker led the way for New Zealand with 23 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the field, while Charlisse Leger-Walker finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds.

New Zealand managed to win the rebounding battle (52-46) and shot the ball more efficiently than Japan, however, 26 turnovers made it difficult to produce on offence.

Head coach Jody Cameron was pleased with the girls’ effort and is looking forward to the team’s next matchup against defending champs China.

“It was a great first hit out against Japan. Our turnovers let us down, otherwise we were well in contention for the W. Our standout players were Charlisse and Charlotte leading from the front, although Koha Lewis and Emilia Shearer had great debuts coming off the bench and gave us some great energy.

“We’re hoping to build some momentum heading into tomorrow’s game against China and we’ll obviously be looking to come away with a win.”
