Aon U15 Boys stun Australia, Girls take down Samoa on Day Three at Oceania Championship

The Aon New Zealand U15 boys have stunned Australia on Day Three of the FIBA Oceania Championship, winning 59-57 to stay undefeated, while the girls defeated Samoa 65-63.

Joshua Book led the scoring for New Zealand with 11 on 3-of-5 shooting, but it was a total team effort in the victory. Every player who has played minutes during the tournament has scored, a positive trend for a team having such great success to this point.

New Zealand only shot 32.6 per cent from the field and 5-of-21 from three, but they held Australia to 36.1 per cent shooting and 1-of-18 on 3-point attempts. It was a defensive battle all game long, but New Zealand’s 47-35 advantage on the glass was a big reason why they were able to come away with the win. They’ll look to remain unbeaten against Samoa later today.

The girls found themselves in a 22-9 hole after the first quarter but would outscore Samoa 47-21 in the second and third quarters to take the lead. Samoa wouldn’t roll over, though, as they went on a 20-9 run in the fourth to make it a close finish. New Zealand managed to knuckle down and hold on for the victory, moving their record to 2-1.

Melika Samia played a fantastic game with a team-high 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting, while Zaaliyah Kailahi-Fulu finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Fiji is next on the slate for the girls.
