The Christchurch leg of the 3x3 Tour has been won by Team AKL featuring Karl Magon, Zacc Dwan, Brent Fisher, and Tommy Fairbrother. As a result, the team has qualified for the Quest Tour Final which will be held in Auckland on 9 March. At that event, eight teams will compete for the big prize of an all-expenses paid trip to compete at a FIBA 3x3 World Tour Masters in Chengdu, China, starting 1 June.

Team AKL won the final against an all-Canadian team 18 to 15. Team AKL’s Captain, Karl Magon, said it was a tough event, with a number of teams having a good chance of winning the Christchurch leg.

“The day went pretty well for us. We lost one game to the Lincoln boys, 11 to 10. Then there were a number of tough games with close scores. A lot of teams went to a three-way tie with two losses, but luckily we came out on top with three wins and one loss. It was super competitive and hard all the way through.”

Only one more qualifying event remains, which will be held on Saturday, 2 March, at Eventfinda Stadium (formerly NSEC), of Auckland’s North Shore.

Magon said he’s excited to have qualified for the Quest Tour Final, which he attended in 2018 as part of another team.

“I was with the Flying Kiwis with Rory Fannon, Dom Kelman-Poto and we had Hayden Allen in there as well. So we lost in our semi unfortunately last year. So, with this new team, we will be back to try and trump Karl Noyer’s team hopefully, but that will be hard work.

“Our strategy up there will simply be to play hard and try to take away the key scorers from each team, but it’s hard when you’re playing teams like Karl Noyer’s team where everyone can score, so you’ve just got to play hard and see what happens.”

Magon said Team AKL will not have much opportunity to practice before the Quest Tour Final as he is based in Auckland while his teammates are based in Christchurch.

They will be at a disadvantage with other qualified teams practicing regularly each week.
