The poise and tenacity shown by Charlotte Whittaker in the games for New Zealand Select against China B in June surprised many observers.
Playing against an experienced international team 15 year old Whittaker was the youngest player in the New Zealand team and played with a level of composure beyond her years.
That experience had been enhanced a few weeks earlier on the Junior Tall Ferns tour of China when she was a key member of the squad that played against a USA Select, Poland Under 23 and the China U17 teams.
Whittaker has a major ambition to go on and play college basketball in the USA but right now she is enjoying playing for North Canterbury at the Under 17 National Championships at North Shore Events Centre.
Whittaker and her team have ambitions to make the top eight play-offs but their quarter-final dreams were dealt a blow on Wednesday morning when they were defeated 81-59 by Hawkes Bay.
The Rangiora High School centre reeled off 25 points but her efforts were not enough to overcome a determined Hawkes Bay outfit.
Things did improve later in the day as North Canterbury defeated Palmerston North 55-47, Whittaker scoring 19 points, as those hopes remained alive.
Listen to Mike Lacey interview Charlotte after her first game this morning, after her North Canterbury went down to Hawkes Bay.
