NZ basketball team to be sent to the 2018 Youth Olympics

New Zealand has qualified for the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games men’s 3x3 basketball event in Buenos Aires, Argentina on 6 to 18 October

The event will feature 20 men’s and 20 women’s 3x3 teams from 33 different countries in Buenos Aires, taking part in the event, plus the two individual contests: the men's dunk and the women's shoot-out.

The New Zealand U18 men are currently ranked 23 in World, while New Zealand U18 women are ranked 27 in world. The men have scraped in under the universality rule, which are applied for the lower ranked teams.

This will mark the third edition of the Summer Youth Olympic Games, where 3x3 made its official debut in Singapore back in 2010. Lithuania's men and USA's women won the last edition in Nanjing, China in 2014.

Belgium's men and USA's women earned their ticket to Buenos Aires after winning gold at the FIBA 3x3 U18 World Cup in Chengdu, China last year.

Argentina will bring both men's and women's squads thanks to being hosts.

The other teams qualified to the Youth Olympic Games because of their position in the FIBA 3x3 Federation Ranking.

Only 7 countries will have a team in the 2 categories: Andorra, Argentina, China, Estonia, Ukraine, USA and Venezuela.

The event will star 20 men's and 20 women's teams competing in the team's tournament and).
